Do you think maybe your website design is obviously bad?
Did your heart just go pitter patter and all a scatter?
One thing that strikes fear into the heart of Internet Entrepreneurs is the words “bad design”. This is the stuff nightmares are made of.
Fear not, avoiding bad design is actually easy.
Don’t try and reinvent the web.
If you don’t like the way most sites do something, that’s really ok but please oh please consider keeping it to yourself. The fact is that most egregious examples of bad design get started with the idea of doing something a whole new way. Don’t do that, leave that sort of work to advanced designers only.
Being cool is ok until you encourage errors.
It sure is fun to have fun and making sure everyone understands you are neato burrito is just peachy keen. Until they have no idea what the heck you are talking about. Please stop being unique before you become unintelligible.
People hate waiting.
Efficiency has always been one of the pillars of usability – think about how long things take and think about how easy things are. This principle is usually well understood by ecommerce folks – which is why web developers can sometimes be found drooling in corners constantly repeating “three clicks, three clicks, gotta be less than 3 clicks” while they giggle somewhat insanely.
Here’s the bottom line for Internet Entrepreneurs: You can slay the dragon that is bad design with three simple rules. Don’t reinvent, don’t confuse people with your coolness, and think about efficiency.
It is my sincere hope you will no longer need to sleep with the light on. Banish bad design today.
